The History of Craps

I first played "Hazard" (as the game was called then) in England during the 18th century then in France in the 19th century. In France, they played a version where the player rolled against the house, while the English version had a player vs. player type of game.  The meaning of the name Craps actually deals with a losing bet. In the early days, a roller (shooter) automatically lost when rolling a 3 or 1/1. Rolling a 1/1 is now commonly referred to as "snake eyes" but back then, we called it "crabs." Somewhere along the way some drunken blaggard mispronounced this as "craps" which later became the popular name fer the game.

In 1813, a scallywag by the name of Bernard de Mandeville created a new and simplified version of craps and brought it to the Americas. Old Bernard's variation of the game spread wildly in the New World. His version of the game was exposed often to loaded (fixed) dice, since the only bets in it were field and come bets. In 1865, an improved version was published by John H. Winn (who was also a dice-maker.) In his version, players could choose whether to bet with er against the roller, which made loaded dice a non-issue. Winn's variation led to the craps version which is played today.

How to Play Craps

Craps is fast, fun and extremely exciting - ye will often hear loud clapping and yelling at the tables as these games draw a big crowd at the land-based casinos.  It's easy to learn, and the captain will show ye a few steps that'll have ye playing craps like an expert in no time.

Four casino employees known as the "crew" usually run a craps table. This craps crew consists of two dealers who stand on the inside of the table. Each is responsible fer changing cash into chips and collecting and paying off bets on their half of the table. In between the dealers sits the 'Boxman'. He overseas all the actions, settles any disputes and supervises the other three employees. He also examines the dice that go off the table to make sure they were not switched or compromised by cheaters. The 'Stickman' stands directly across from the Boxman on the other side of the table and handles the dice with a long curved stick, pushing them to the player that's about to roll, or retrieving them after they've been rolled. The Stickman also announces what numbers were rolled and takes the bets in the center of the table.

A  session of craps begins when the Stickman offers six dice to one of the players. The player selects two of them and becomes the Shooter or roller. This is the player that will be rolling and creating the numbers that all the players at the table will be betting on.  The Shooter switches to the player directly clockwise from the previous shooter and continues around the table in that manner after each players turn as the shooter is finished. Prior to  the dice being rolled, the Shooter is required to make a line bet on either the Pass Line or the Don't Pass Bar (see illustration above). The other players will also be placing their bets on the table at the same time.

Captains Tip: Always Bet the pass line. If ye are a beginner then start out by only betting the minimum amount allowed.  If ye are winning then try to increase yer bet by one chip each time ye have a winner.  Try to go back to the table minimum after a loss.  Do this until ye feel entirely comfortable with the game.

The first roll in a craps session is known as the Come Out Roll.  During the Come Out Roll there are a few ways that players can win or lose.  If they bet on the Pass Line then a player wins if a 7 or 11 is rolled.  During the Come Out Roll the total  number of the two dice that the Shooter rolled becomes the Point so long as that total number does not add up to 2,3,7,11 or 12.   The Dealers then place a puck atop that Point number on the table with the "ON" side of the puck facing up. This reminds players where the Point is. Usually every time the Shooter rolls and gets the Point,  players will win or lose.

Captains Tip: Always Take full odds on the Pass Line, Don't Pass Bar or Come bets. This is the best bet in the entire casino and is exactly a 50/50 proposition.  Take advantage of this opportunity and maximize yer full bet.  Most casinos offer double odds bets.  In this case if ye had a $4 minimum wager then yer odds bet could be an additional $8.  Ye would then have a total of $12 on this bet and will reap the benefits greatly.

Craps Rules On The Come Out Roll. No matter what bets are placed on the craps table, fer the Come Out Roll, the rules never ever change.

  • If the Come Out Roll is a 7 or 11 (also know as a Natural), the Pass Line wins and the Don't Pass Bar loses.

  • If the Come Out Roll is a 2, 3 or 12 (also known as Craps), the Pass Line loses and the Don't Pass Bar wins or ties. Usually the Don't Pass Bet will be a tie when the Come Out Roll is 12. 

  • If the Come Out Roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, then that number becomes the Shooter's Point. The Shooter will keep rolling until the Shooter A.) rolls the point or B.) rolls a 7.  If the point is rolled first, Pass Line bettors win and Don't Pass bettors lose. If the 7 is rolled first, then the Pass Loses and the Don't Pass wins. 

A couple rules to bear in mind...

  • 7 can only be a winner on the Come Out Roll fer Pass Line Bettors. 7 is always a loser fer Pass Line Bettors on any other  roll. The opposite is the case fer Don't Pass Bettors.

  • The numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12 have no consequence fer Pass or Don't Pass Bets after the Come Out Roll has been completed. 

Captains Tip: Understand the Inside table, field and middle bets. These are among the worst odds in the casino.  The captain advises to stay away from these bets until ye have a better understanding of the game.

Craps Terminology

Any Craps:  A one-toss bet on all of the Craps numbers with one wager.  Payoff is 7 to 1.

Any Seven:  A one-toss bet on any of the possible combinations of seven. Payoff is 4 to 1.

Barred Number:  Can be either the 2 or the 12. Creates a tie when betting Don't Pass er Don't Come.

Bet Numbers Across:  A group of five bets on all the Place numbers other than the Point number.

Big Six or Big Eight:  A bet made on either 6 er 8 that it will be rolled before a 7 comes up. Pays even money.

Boxman:  The casino employee who supervises the Craps game and deposits money into the drop-box.

Buy Bet:  A Place bet made at true odds rather than at Place odds. Carries a 5% fee.

Come Bet:  Exactly the same as a Pass Line bet after the shooter's Point is established.

Come-out Roll:  The shooters initial roll of the dice.

Craps:  The name fer a roll of  2, 3 or 12.

Don't Come:  The same as Don't Pass bets  after the shooter's Point is established. Exact opposite of the come bet.

Don't Pass:  An even money bet that the shooter will not toss his Point number again before tossing a 7.  This bet is placed prior to the come out roll.

Don't Pass Bet:  That a 2 or 3 will be rolled on the first roll, or that a 7 will come up before the shooter repeats his Point. The opposite of the line bet.

Double Odds:  A bet permitted in almost every casino that enables the player to  take an odds bet at twice the amount of the  original wager on the line.

Easy Number:  This is any number that appears in any combination other than as a matching pair.

Field Bet:  This is a once off bet that a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 will be the next roll of the dice. 2 or 12 pays double.

Front Line:  This is just another name fer  the Pass Line.

Full Odds:  Utilizing the maximum amount of odds bet ye are allowed to make behind a line or come bet.  This is known as taking "full odds".

Hard Number:  Any number that appears  as a pair. Fer example a pair of 5s are called a "Hard"  Ten.

Hardway Bets:  Bets made on a number in the hopes that it will appear  as a pair before appearing any other way or before a 7 is rolled.

High / Low:  A once off bet on both the 2 and the 12.  Ye must use two bets.  The Payoff is 30 to 1.

Horn Bet:  In this bet ye win if a 2,3,11 or 12 are rolled.  Ye lose if anything else is rolled.

Lay Bet:  This is a bet  that the shooter will roll a 7 prior to the number that is bet on. The player using this bet must wager more than he could win.

Lay Odds:  An additional bet that allows the Don't Pass bettors to give odds on their bets. This is the exact opposite of the odds bets on the pass line.

Natural:  A 7 or 11 on the Come-out roll.

Odds Bet:  An additional bet which can be made by players having Pass Line.  This increases the value of yer bet and is very valuable.

Off:  This means simply that the  bets are not working. This is shown on the puck and is usually during the come out roll.

On:  This means that the bets are working. This is usually after a come out roll.

Pass Line Bet:  This is a bet that the shooter  will win either by rolling a 7 or 11 on the first roll or that the shooter will roll his point before a 7 is rolled.

Place Bets:  These bets are ones in which the player wagers that a specific one of the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10  will be rolled  before a 7 is rolled.

Point Number:  During a come out roll any number other than a  2,3,7,11 or 12 becomes the point.

Press Up:  This is the act of increasing ones wager by using winnings from the previous  roll.

Proposition Bet:  These are varying bets that the next roll will be a Craps numbers or  7 or 11. These bets have a high payout return, but they are hard to win.

Roll:  The act of tossing, throwing or bouncing the dice.

Seven Out:  This is how a session ends.  It is when a shooter rolls a seven after establishing a point.  All bets are collected and the dice are passed clockwise at this point.

Shooter:  The player who is currently rolling the dice.

Stickman:  The dealer in the center of the Craps table who uses the stick to both retrieve and pass the dice to the shooter.

Working:  This simply means that a bet is still active even though the come out roll is still in effect and no point has been established.
