Most say the game comes from the eighteenth-century French game, poque while others reference the German game, pochspiel. Some say it may even have derived come the Hindu word, pukka. Another explanation is that it came from the slang word, "poke," a term used by pickpockets. The game of poker eventually evolved into a 32 card game and then into the modern day 52 card game. It has evolved from a backroom game to one of the most popular games today, with competitions and tournaments all around the world.
